Parenting

Parenting is one of the most researched topics in the field of social science. Parenting is a process that supports the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of a child.

It is the most important subject – for both the parents and for the kids. Parenting is a life-creation process for the kids from the parents. Parenting is an ongoing and evolving process that requires constant adaptation and adjustment as children grow and develop.

It is not just a natural process as most parents think; preparation of the parents for an effective parenting style is highly advisable. Parents need to study and understand many concepts and wisdom generated through research on various issues connected with raising a child successfully. Many books and research materials are available nowadays.

The most important aspect of parenting is recognizing the fact that children learn mostly by watching their parents and other family members in the home. The home environment plays a critical role. Parents are the role models for their children. Whatever parents want to teach their children – that is possible to teach them through their role-modelling behaviour. Emotional skills and social skills play a significant role in the life of children, along with cognitive intelligence. Role-modelling behaviour from parents plays a significant role in imparting these skills to the children.

Another important parameter under parenting is to accept the fact that every kid is an unique individual and is different from others. No two individuals' thought processes will match. Parents need to accept this and treat their children as unique and equal adults. Trying to control children in a way of authoritarian way is to be avoided. Respect their views and take them along with you in the process of upbringing and life learning.

Many parents think of their children as extensions of them and try to impose their views and methods, which is to be avoided. Unconditional love is the essence of parenting in all the activities – we do under parenting.

Parents need to understand the importance of positive attitude development, learning from mistakes, emotional development and learning from life lessons—the same needs to be imparted to the children through their role-modelling behaviour. The importance of emotional intelligence, adversity skills, along with cognitive skills is to be understood by the parents. A proper mix of all these intelligence quotients is important. Parents need to focus on this aspect and plan their parenting activities accordingly.

The different parenting styles and their effect on children’s development are explained in the book. Parents are required to adopt a suitable parenting style based on their children's temperaments and growth. Parenting is highly dynamic, it is not a constant process, and parents are required to make changes in their parenting style based on the dynamic nature of their children.

The next area under Parenting is Sibling rivalry. It is an opportunity; it is like a giving trial of real life to our children at an early age. There are ways to deal with it to convert sibling rivalry into an opportunity to impart many life skills to children. Again here, the role-modelling behaviour of the parents plays a crucial role. Parents are advised to study sibling rivalry, the psychology behind it and the probable cause for the sibling rivalry. Then understand the ways to handle those conflicts between siblings and convert them into ways to learn for the kids. Parents' preparation towards the subject – of sibling rivalry is highly required.

Teaching life lessons to kids in parenting is essential for their development and success in real life. These life lessons help kids acquire valuable skills, knowledge and values that can guide them throughout their lives on the personal front and professional front. The subject has been discussed in the 3rd chapter. Parents and caretakers have to understand this point and impart the wisdom of essential life lessons to their kids.

In the fourth chapter, we discussed super kids, smart kids and gifted kids. Parents are required to identify the smartness in their kids at an early age to provide the required resources and mentorship for the extraordinary talents to grow further. So understanding the points about smart kids or gifted kids is very important.

Parents have to assign high priority to their parenting and its related activities.

Well-prepared parents, with their role-modelling behaviour –can decide or adopt a proper parenting style to convert their children into smart or super kids.

Warm Regards

Happy Parenting.
